Fellows of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (FPPA)
Purposes
The Fellows of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association (FPPA) Recognition Program serves the following purposes:
- to recognize excellence in pediatric pharmacy practice, and;
- to grant recognition and to promote public awareness of pharmacists who have distinguished themselves in pediatric pharmacy practice.
Authority
The FPPA Recognition Program shall be conducted under the general authority of the PPA Board of Directors. The Board shall approve all regulations pertaining to the operation of the Recognition Program.
Governance
FPPA Recognition Committee: Function and Responsibilities
The program shall be administered by the FPPA Recognition Committee, which shall be appointed by the Board of Directors, and shall have the following specific responsibilities, with respect to the FPPA Program:
- to review and approve recognition eligibility criteria and, in general, to provide quality assurance for the program;
- to approve or not approve candidates for recognition as Fellows.
- to recommend to the Board of Directors any future changes in these Guidelines.
General Criteria for Recognition
The following is a list of general criteria for recognition as a Fellow. Acceptance is not guaranteed. The purpose of the criteria is to establish minimum requirements for acceptance to the Fellows recognition program. The FPPA Selection Committee evaluates each candidate based on the Criteria for Recognition. Current members of the Board of Directors are ineligible for consideration. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance as a Fellow.
Candidate must distinguish themselves in the profession and demonstrate sustained practice excellence and professionalism in pediatric pharmacy practice. (5 points)
Interpretation
The term “candidate”, for purposes of this program, includes pharmacists who have been in practice for a minimum of 10 years (post specialty residency training), and are current members of PPA for five (5) years at the time of nomination.
In fulfilling this criterion, it is expected that the level of demonstrated practice will reflect a commitment to practice excellence throughout his or her career. The candidate must provide sufficient documentation that a level of excellence has been achieved through sustained practice. For example, development, implementation, or enhancement of systems or programs (within the candidate’s current or a previous practice site) that resulted in an improved level of practice. Particular emphasis shall be placed on innovation, creativity, and conceptualization of new or improved practice methods. Since it is recognized that these factors are not the exclusive basis upon which to determine practice excellence, other evidence submitted by the candidate that addresses this criterion will be considered.
Each candidate must assure that at least three colleagues (practitioners, administrators, or academicians) can attest to the applicant’s professionalism and contributions as a pediatric practitioner
Candidate shall have contributed to the total body of knowledge in pediatric pharmacy practice. (5 points)
Interpretation
The following may be submitted as evidence that the candidate has a record of contributing to the total body of knowledge in pharmacy practice.
- publication of scientific or professional papers on relevant topics of pharmacy and/or drug therapy in refereed journals (senior author or coauthor is acceptable); and/or publication of a textbook or a chapter(s) in a textbook(s) on some aspect of pharmacy and/or drug therapy; and/or
- presentations at professional meetings; and/or
- production or publication of educational aids on some aspect of pharmacy.
Candidate must be involved in and committed to educating practitioners in pediatric pharmacy practice and/or pharmacotherapy. (5 points)
Interpretation
Each candidate must be actively involved in educational programs. For example: a) making presentations to pediatric practitioners on topics that pertain to pediatric pharmacy practice; b) providing guidance to colleagues in practice; c) precepting residents; d) mentoring staff; e) training technicians; f) conducting clerkship/rotations; g) educating students; and/or, h) educating the public.
Candidate must demonstrate active involvement and leadership in professional activities, especially within the Pediatric Pharmacy Association. (5 points)
Interpretation
Candidate must support the profession as evidenced by a record of consistent and active involvement and leadership in professional activities, such as membership and participation in PPA. Some examples of activities in which a candidate may have participated are as follows:
- served as an elected officer of a national, state, regional, or local pharmacy organization;
- served as member of a pharmacy association policy recommending body;
- served as a member of a commission, committee, task force, or ad hoc group established by a national, state, regional or local pharmacy association;
- served as a reviewer, editorial board member, or editor for a national, professional refereed journal; and/or
- served as a reviewer of papers submitted for presentation at national pharmacy meetings.
Recognition of Exemplary leadership service to PPA. (up to 3 extra points)
In addition to the general assessment of professional service, Fellow candidates can receive bonus points rewarding exemplary service to PPA (national organization) specifically.
- Elected Officer of PPA (President, Secretary, Treasurer): 1 point
- More than one full term as Officer of PPA: 1 point
- Committee Chair: 0.5 points
- More than one successful term as chair: 0.5 points
FPPA Recognition Application Evaluation and Designation of FPPA Status
- The FPPA Recognition Committee membership includes current Fellows and is chaired by a current Fellow appointed by the PPA President.
- The FPPA Recognition Committee members individually evaluate each criteria for each applicant (each criteria is evaluated on a 5-point scale).
- Scores are averaged. Applicants must obtain a minimum average score of 18 points (out of 20) in order to be considered for FPPA status. However, a score of 18 does not automatically designate a candidate as Fellow.
- A candidate achieving recognition shall be designated a “Fellow of the Pediatric Pharmacy Association” (FPPA).
- Candidates achieving FPPA status shall be recognized at a ceremony, conducted on their behalf, during the PPA Annual Meeting.
Application Process
- Members of the PPA Board of Directors or FPPA Recognition Committee are not eligible to apply during their term of office.
- Those interested in becoming a candidate must fill-out an online application form. (Form coming soon)
- All requests for applications submitted to PPA will remain confidential. Materials submitted in support of a candidate’s bid for recognition status shall not be received by anyone other than the members of the FPPA Recognition Committee, or others involved in the review process.
- Candidates are required to solicit three (3) recommendations from colleagues who can support and attest to the candidate’s qualification as a Fellow of PPA.To this end, a colleague writing on his or her behalf must not focus on one accomplishment only but, rather, must personally assess the extent to which the applicant’s overall contributions have made a positive impact on pediatric pharmacy practice. If a letter is submitted in lieu of the online form, it must address all areas contained in the on-line form.
* Recommendation Forms/Letters must be received by the application deadline
- Completed applications, including all supporting materials that address the specific criteria outlined for recognition status, can be submitted throughout the year. However, applications must be submitted on or before the deadline to be considered for the next calendar year. Only information contained in the application will be considered. The candidate has the burden of establishing that the criteria have been met. An application may be amended, expanded, or supplemented at any time until it is submitted to the FPPA Recognition Committee; thereafter, no changes can be made.
- Acknowledgement of receipt of the application shall be sent to the candidate.
- The Chair of the FPPA Recognition Committee will start his/her term in December of each year.
- The Executive Director of PPA will submit completed files on all candidates to the FPPA Recognition Committee
- The FPPA Recognition Committee will render its decision based only on the application materials and the criteria for recognition. Any member of the FPPA Recognition Committee who feels that he/she cannot be objective in review and voting on an application should excuse him/herself from the discussion and voting on the applicant. In this case, if a tie vote occurs the decision will be referred to the Board. The PPA Board of Directors and/or the FPPA Nominations Committee can recommend a candidate without a formal nomination.
- The FPPA Recognition Committee shall meet in each year unless there are no candidates and no other business.
- FPPA Recognition Committee will provide FPPA recommendations to the Board of Directors during their business meeting.
- The candidate will be notified in writing, of the FPPA Recognition Committee decision following approval by the PPA Board of Directors no later than March 3.
- Successful candidates will be recognized at a special ceremony during the Annual Meeting in the spring conducted on their behalf.
